Ippo Returns for Round Two

A new anime for Hajime no Ippo!?!? Remake or continuation, it really doesn’t matter! This announcement’s been a long time coming!

JANUARY 2009, WHY ARE YOU SO FAR AWAY!?

JANUARY 2009, WHY ARE YOU SO FAR AWAY!?

This, along with the Fullmetal Alchemist reboot, is probably the best confirmed news I’ve heard for the 2009 anime year thus far!

Apparently this week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Magazine (#42) is set to announce that the long-running boxing manga by George Morikawa’s set to return to television sets in Japan this January. Ever since the June 2003 Champion Road TV special and the September 2003 OVA, Mashiba vs. Kimura. , the manga’s steadily climbed to a staggering 800+ chapters in length and the combined 80+ volumes have sold 73 million copies.

Currently there doesn’t seem to be any word as to what studio will be responsible for the animation production, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Madhouse was again willing to handle this project. Fans of the original 2000-2002 anime will recall that it lasted a beefy 76 episodes, so if the unconfirmed rumor of this second season being around 90 episodes in length turns out to be true Madhouse should have no shortage of prior experience to fall back on.
