Best of Chara Hobby 2008

With Chara Hobby 2008 now underway this weekend in Japan, the first few pictures of the premieres of future releases have slowly found their way to the net. So, what caught my eye this year? Here are my three picks for the best premieres in show:

3) Shana - Shakugan no Shana

3) Shana - Shakugan no Shana

Now here’s a Figma release that’s sure to set fire on the sales charts. By all indications, making Shana merchandise is pretty much as safe as investing in gold at this point in time; heck she probably even has a better return. Having just finished off a somewhat successful second anime season, Shana’s staying power in the collective otaku consciousness is still going to be strong well after Max Factory releases this to the masses. My only concern? How the hell are people going to manage all that hair?

2) Mai Shiranui - Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters

2) Mai Shiranui - Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters

Okay, I admit it, I was THIS close to buying the last Mai Shiranui figure I saw: the Max Factory release… you know, the one with the excessive ASS (lol, thanks Hamasaki-sensei!). Then I figured that her forehead and eyes were a bit too large for her own good and made her look like a giant slut as if the ridiculously well-ventilated ninja gear wasn’t enough. Now this particular release won’t do any better to present Mai in a much more conservative light (c’mon, that just wouldn’t be Mai’s style anyway), but I figured that her dimensions were a bit more appropriate and less over the top this time around. No word yet on who’s putting this figure to market just yet, but you can be sure I’ll be back with a follow-up on this Mai closer to her release date.

1) Yoko - Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

1) Yoko - Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

Oh.

Sweet.

God.

I knew I waited just long enough to hold out on a Yoko release… This masterpiece by Alter completely blows just about every other rendition of Yoko released thus far out of the water. Bar none, nothing else even comes close to capturing her femme fatale nature than well, EVERYTHING about this sculpt. This is obviously timeskip Yoko from the latter half of Gurren-Lagann (the jacket’s a dead giveaway) whose nicely upgraded attire was criminally undershown and cruelly replaced by an atrocious spacewhore getup (star boobs anyone?) that was rivaled only by Viral’s Superman pajamatime fiasco. So much for me getting that Fraulein Revoltech release, lol!
